Hope For Future

Hope for Future CBO is a community-based organisation in Kilifi County, Kenya, that empowers children and young people through education support, mental health and psychosocial support, mentorship, and skills development, helping them access opportunities and build brighter futures.

What
We Do

Hope for Future CBO was born in Kilifi County from a simple but powerful question: “What about the next young person?” For the founder, Festus Jefwa, this question became deeply personal after witnessing a childhood friend struggle with substance abuse. Though his friend eventually found support and rehabilitation, the question remained — who would be there for the next young person? Having experienced the value of counselling, mentorship, and community support in his own life, Festus believed that young people could also become part of the solution. He brought together fellow youth to create safe spaces where they could speak openly, listen to one another, and find support. This vision gave birth to Tusemezane — meaning “Let’s Talk.” What began as simple peer-led conversations gradually grew into a movement rooted in hope, connection, and opportunity. In 2023, Hope for Future was officially registered as a community-based organization, expanding its impact beyond mental wellbeing into education, child protection, youth mentorship, skills and talent development, and empowerment. Today, the organization works hand in hand with communities and partners to help children and young people overcome barriers, discover their potential, and build brighter futures.

Challenges

  • The gap between the needs we see in our community and the resources available to respond to them remains one of our biggest challenges.
  • Young people need consistent mental health and psychosocial support services, mentorship, and skills development opportunities.
  • Programme sustainability: Limited funding makes it difficult to sustain programmes over time and provide consistent support to the children and young people we serve.
  • Sometimes, we have the ideas, community trust, and commitment to make a difference, but the resources are not enough to turn every opportunity into action.
  • Long-term funding and partnerships: Meaningful community change takes time, trust, consistency, and relationships. Community-based organisations need flexible, predictable, and sustained support rather than only short-term project funding.
  • Some of the most meaningful changes, such as a child attending school for the first time, a young person seeking mental health support, or a family learning to communicate more openly, may not always be immediately visible in reports.

Achievements

  • Through our Ndoto Yangu Itimie initiative, we are helping children who once had no opportunity to attend school access educational opportunities and begin their educational journey.
  • We have created spaces where young people can speak openly about mental health, discover their talents, and seek support without fear of judgement.
  • Through support from Maono Space, we have gained opportunities for mentorship, peer learning, networking, and organisational development, helping us strengthen our systems, programmes, and partnerships.
  • We have strengthened our confidence to engage with donors, county government representatives, and other stakeholders, bringing local realities into conversations about community development.
  • We are increasingly contributing to conversations about solutions affecting children, young people, and families, recognising that community organisations should help shape decisions rather than simply implement them.
  • Through education support, mentorship, mental health and psychosocial support, and skills development, we are helping young people overcome challenges, build confidence, and access opportunities for a brighter future.
  • Restoring hope and creating possibilities: We are proud of the positive changes we see in children and young people, from accessing education for the first time to finding the confidence to seek support and discover their potential.
