What
We Do
Emmas1Poet uses spoken-word poetry, theatre, storytelling and other forms of artistic expression to preserve cultural identity, promote mental well-being and create opportunities for young people to explore their identities and understand their communities.
Through performances, creative mentorship and oral storytelling, Emmas1Poet creates spaces where people can share experiences, reflect on their lives and engage with stories that influence how they see themselves and the world around them.
The creative practice also focuses on mentoring and inspiring emerging poets, helping them develop their talents and pursue their own creative journeys. Beyond individual artistic expression, the goal is to build a lasting creative legacy through the people who learn, grow and find inspiration in the work.
With support from Maono Space, Emmas1Poet has gained access to a supportive creative community, opportunities to showcase artistic work and connections with people who share a passion for poetry, storytelling and theatre. This has contributed to the growth of the creative practice and expanded opportunities for audience engagement.
Emmas1Poet also uses poetry and storytelling to represent community experiences and bring important perspectives into conversations involving donors, policymakers and other stakeholders, recognising that art can influence decisions, challenge perspectives and contribute to meaningful social change.
Challenges
- The hardest part is having to turn away vulnerable community members and restrict our growth because our current funding levels cannot keep pace with the massive, rising demand for food security and climate-smart agricultural training.
- Access to platforms, audiences and spaces where spoken-word poetry, theatre and storytelling can be showcased has been a challenge.
- Measuring artistic impact: Some of the most meaningful changes created through poetry, storytelling and performances are difficult to quantify or trace back to a particular intervention.
- Funders and stakeholders may not always recognise the value of subtle changes in how individuals understand themselves, relate to others or respond to their communities.
- Creating spaces where people can share their voices, be heard and engage with meaningful stories requires continued support and investment.
Achievements
- Emmas1Poet has successfully mentored and inspired more than five poets, surpassing a personal goal of encouraging at least five individuals to follow a similar creative path.
- Through mentorship and artistic inspiration, Emmas1Poet has helped other poets develop their skills and pursue their creative journeys, ensuring that the influence of the work continues through others.
- Through engagement with Maono Space, Emmas1Poet has connected with a supportive artistic community, gained opportunities to showcase creative work and reached audiences who appreciate poetry, storytelling and theatre.
- Participation in conversations with donors, policymakers and other stakeholders has increased confidence in using artistic expression to represent the experiences and concerns of people who may not have access to decision-making spaces.
- Emmas1Poet has developed a more intentional approach to storytelling, using poetry and performance to communicate community realities, influence perspectives and encourage meaningful reflection.
- Through spoken word, theatre and oral storytelling, Emmas1Poet contributes to preserving cultural identity, supporting healing and helping young people better understand themselves and their communities.
