One Million Trees 4Kilifi

OneMillionTrees4Kilifi is a tree-planting initiative in Kilifi County, Kenya, launched in 2022. It engages students in planting trees to combat deforestation, improve local climate, and raise environmental awareness, benefiting both schools and surrounding communities.

What
We Do

OneMilliontrees4Kilifi is an initiative that started in Novermber 2022.We are situated in the coastal region of Kenya, Kilifi County, Malindi. Our offices are at Maono space along Ngowe road off Lamu road. I came up with this initiative because being a professional teacher who has visited more than 50 primary and secondary schools in Kilifi county I realized that the students lack shade to rest under during break time, some suffer from malnutrition and the level of rainfall in the region keep on decreasing due to deforestation taking place in the schools and the regions. To correct this onemilliontrees4kilifi was formed. We chose schools to undertake our program because for you to have a generation that understands climate mitigation and conversation we need to start training the young ones from a very tender age. By involving 200 students in a school, in a tree planting activity we have trained 200 families on the same. Through collaboration with other CBOs ,through art we are able to change the behavior of the community. We are also setting up a nursery bed to increase the number of trees available for planting.

Challenges

  • In adequate tree seedlings to plant. Most of the time we are given land by interested parties but we end up utilizing a fraction of land due to few tree seedlings.
  • Transport We are faced with difficult during transportation of the tree seedlings to the planting areas.
  • Payment of staff After planting we always ensure that the trees are taken care of. This is done by assigning staff members to do the watering. It becomes costly running projects in dry areas because we have to pay persons to water the trees.
  • Water Kilifi is a region that receives minimal amount of rainfall. In order for the trees to grow we need to water them. This always a challenge because we have very few water storage facilities and dams in the region. By having dams and 10,000L tanks we can be able to triple our tree planting number.
  • Advanced equipment The areas we plant trees are usually very hard. To use the old methods of digging holes takes a lot of time. This can be solved through having advanced equipment’s like hole, drillers. Equipment for watering especially drip irrigation.

Achievements

  • We have been able to Champion the digging of  boreholes at a park in Malindi town which is called Buntwani. When we started planting trees at this Park we used to have a lot of stress fetching water from a far Place but true collaboration with the fax management on the office of the cabinet secretary for water in Kilifi county, now we enjoy flowing water at the park which is used to water the plants that we continue planting there.
  • After the research we have done I realize that Majivuni lost over 13% of its recover within 10 years we have embarked on reforesting Magarini region so far we have already planted 1 acre of trees just near  Magarini center to work as a model to the residence so that they can be motivated to plant more trees.
  • We have planted over 10,000 Mangroves at Gedeng Camp near Sabaki estuary to restore the migrants that are normally cut by the residence for building and also for selling. These created  a good habitat for the hippopotamus that are located in the  Sabaki  River.
  • We have planted over 400 trees at Buntwani Park in Malindi Kilifi and now we are embarking on the process of planting flowers at the back so that it can be as beautiful as the park is supposed to be.
  • Through collaborations with over 25 schools in Kilifi County we have been able to reclimate the schools by planting trees that’s hoping to give the schools shed in the near future.
  • Panda Rafiki running entire of October being launched on 1st/10/2023
  • Planting Flowers at Buntwani ongoing
  • Magarini reforestation of 100 acres ongoing in collaboration with green Hallo Initiative, Oliver founder Thellesi Trust and Al Kags Founder Open Institute
