As the sun begins to set on the last Saturday of every month, Maono Space in Malindi comes alive.
From 4:00 PM, people of all ages stream into the venue, filling every seat long before the performances begin. Young people sit beside elders, families gather together, and first-time visitors mingle with regular attendees. They are all there for one reason: to celebrate local talent.
In a county where creative spaces are few, Maono Space has become a place where artists and audiences meet without barriers. There are no invitation cards and no entrance fee. Anyone can walk in and experience the incredible talent that Kilifi has to offer. That simple opportunity has transformed Mnato Sato into a community tradition.
Behind Every Performance
What the audience witnesses on stage each month is only part of the story.
Behind every performance are days of preparation. From Monday through Saturday, Maono Space opens its doors to local creatives as they rehearse for the upcoming showcase. Musicians perfect their songs, dancers fine-tune their routines, comedians polish their jokes, spoken word artists refine their poetry, and actors rehearse scenes that will soon captivate a live audience.
For many of these artists, Mnato Sato is an opportunity to be seen, build confidence, and share their gifts with the community.
During the latest Edition on Saturday, 25th July, the atmosphere reflected exactly why this platform matters.
An Evening of Talents and Community
The audience sang along to music, erupted in laughter during comedy performances, applauded energetic dance routines, and listened attentively as spoken word artists delivered powerful messages. Every performance was met with cheers and encouragement—the kind of response every artist hopes for. It was a celebration not only of talent but also of the community that continues to support it.
The evening reached its climax with the monthly stage play, TUZO, written by Emmanuel Omondi, one of Maono Space’s community members and a talented playwright and stage director. The production explored nepotism, corruption, and the misuse of power—themes that resonate deeply with the realities many Kenyans face today. Through compelling storytelling, humor, and drama, the play invited the audience to reflect on the society around them while remaining thoroughly entertained.
In addition to TUZO, Maono Space has staged other original plays over the past two months, all written by Emmanuel Omondi, a talented playwrights and stage director. WIMBO encouraged audiences to reflect on personal responsibility, while MGENI explored the importance of community security and collective responsibility in keeping neighbourhoods safe. Although each play tells a different story, they all share a common purpose: using theatre to spark conversations around social issues that affect our communities and inspire positive change.

These monthly performances highlight the power of edutainment, and its ability to entertain while educating, to make people laugh while inspiring meaningful conversations, and to use creativity as a tool for social change. At Mnato Sato, every performance goes beyond applause. It creates dialogue, encourages reflection, and strengthens the connection between artists and their community.
